OpenAI Closes Historic $122 Billion Funding Round at $852 Billion Valuation
OpenAI has completed the largest private funding round in history, raising $122 billion at an $852 billion valuation, with Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank among the lead investors.
OpenAI has officially closed what is now the largest private funding round in venture capital history: a staggering $122 billion raise that values the company at $852 billion. The round, which closed on March 31, 2026, adds to OpenAI's already enormous war chest and signals the continued acceleration of AI infrastructure investment worldwide.
The round was led by SoftBank Group and co-invested by a roster of tech and financial giants. Amazon committed $50 billion — though $35 billion of that is contingent on OpenAI achieving an IPO or reaching the technological milestone of artificial general intelligence. Nvidia and SoftBank each put in $30 billion, with additional participation from Andreessen Horowitz, D.E. Shaw Ventures, MGX, TPG, T. Rowe Price Associates, and Microsoft. About $3 billion came from individual retail investors via bank channels, marking an unusual move for a private company of this scale.
The capital will be used to fund massive AI chip procurement, new data center construction across the globe, and aggressive talent acquisition. OpenAI is currently generating $2 billion in revenue per month, with enterprise adoption now making up more than 40% of total revenue — a figure expected to reach parity with consumer revenue by the end of 2026. ChatGPT now counts more than 900 million weekly active users and over 50 million paying subscribers.
The funding round underscores a broader trend: AI infrastructure is increasingly seen as critical national and corporate infrastructure, attracting investment on a scale previously reserved for governments. With an IPO anticipated later in 2026, OpenAI's trajectory from a nonprofit research lab to the world's most valuable private AI company represents one of the most dramatic pivots in tech history. At its current valuation, OpenAI is already worth more than most Fortune 500 companies.
