Anthropic Extends Free Fable 5 Again — the Deadline That Keeps Moving

Anthropic pushed free Fable 5 access to July 19 — its third extension in 18 days — as GPT-5.6 undercuts it on price and Grok 4.5 goes live. An Opus 5 leak in Cursor fuels the theory that the extensions are a bridge to the next flagship.

For the third time in 18 days, Anthropic has blinked. The company extended free Claude Fable 5 access on all paid plans (Pro, Max, and Team) through July 19, and kept Claude Code's weekly rate limits 50% higher for the same window, per TechTimes and Forbes. Each deadline — July 1, July 7, July 12 — was resolved at the wire, not in advance.

Why now: the competition got cheap and good

The timing isn't subtle. The latest extension landed the same week OpenAI shipped GPT-5.6 — a model that tops several agentic benchmarks while pricing its flagship Sol at $5/$30 per million tokens, half of what Fable 5 usage will cost — and as xAI's Grok 4.5 went live. When rivals launch models that are both excellent and cheaper, giving your best model away for another week is the defensive move that keeps subscribers from wandering.

Anthropic's official reason

The company's stated rationale is capacity, not competition: demand for Fable 5 after its 19-day export-control suspension has been "very high and difficult to predict," and the promotional cap lets Anthropic ration access rather than risk a service disruption at full subscription volume. Both things can be true — the capacity crunch is real, and so is the competitive squeeze.

The Opus 5 theory

Here's the detail fueling speculation: references to Claude Opus 5 reportedly surfaced in Cursor's model configuration this week. That supports the read that the rolling extensions are a bridge — keep users inside the Claude ecosystem, week by week, until the next flagship is ready to take over. If so, expect at least one more extension past July 19.

What's officially scheduled: from July 20, Fable 5 usage moves to prepaid credits at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output. Whether that date holds — or slides again, like the three before it — is now the most-watched deadline in AI.
