OpenAI Pulls DALL·E Out of ChatGPT for Good

The official DALL·E GPT disappeared from ChatGPT on 30 August 2026, ending the run of the last user-facing surface still carrying the name. OpenAI posted the notice on 31 July, giving roughly a month of warning, and the entry simply stopped appearing in the picker on the retirement date. Nothing about the announcement was dramatic, which is arguably the point: the brand that introduced most people to the idea of typing a sentence and getting a picture back was retired as a routine housekeeping item.

Image generation has not gone anywhere. Users are directed to ChatGPT Images, which runs on gpt-image-1 and gpt-image-1-mini, the newer models OpenAI introduced in November 2025 and which sit closer to the text stack than DALL·E ever did. That feature is available on every tier, free accounts included, with the fuller model reserved for paid plans and the mini variant handling lighter workloads. Custom GPTs that users built themselves with image generation enabled are explicitly unaffected — only the company’s own dedicated entry point was removed.

The practical wrinkle is what happens to older work. OpenAI’s notice told people to download any images they wanted to keep before the deadline, but the company has not spelled out what becomes of pictures still sitting in old DALL·E threads. As Notebookcheck pointed out, generated images already vanish when the conversation they came from is deleted, so anything a user cares about is safer on their own disk than in a chat log. Developers lost their version of DALL·E first. The dall-e-2 and dall-e-3 snapshots came out of the API on 12 May 2026, a change OpenAI had flagged back in November 2025, with gpt-image-2, gpt-image-1 and gpt-image-1-mini named as the migration targets on the company’s deprecations page. The August removal closed the consumer half of the same decommissioning.

It is also not an isolated cleanup. The same month saw the Assistants API reach its shutdown date of 26 August, with the Responses and Conversations APIs designated as replacements, and o3 dropped from ChatGPT’s model list on the same day. OpenAI has been steadily collapsing a sprawl of separately branded products into a smaller set of general models, and each of those moves quietly forces a slice of users to rebuild a workflow.

That is the part competitors will be watching. A forced migration is the cheapest moment to lose a customer, because someone who has to change how they work anyway has almost no reason to prefer the incumbent. Anyone still opening DALL·E out of habit this week had to make a deliberate choice about where to generate their next image, and OpenAI is betting that ChatGPT Images is close enough to hand that the question never really gets asked.
