Gemini Hits 1 Billion Users, Two Months After ChatGPT
Sundar Pichai says the Gemini app has passed a billion monthly active users, up from about 950 million in July and roughly two months behind ChatGPT. Voice is now the interface for 63 percent of users, and the app generates over 150 million images a day. The figure counts the standalone app only — not Gemini inside Search, Workspace or Android.
Sundar Pichai said on 11 August that the Gemini app has passed one billion monthly active users, making it the fourteenth Google product to reach that threshold. The company had put the figure at roughly 950 million during its second-quarter earnings call in July, and says daily active users have tripled over the past year.
The milestone lands about two months after OpenAI’s ChatGPT crossed the same line in June 2026. That ordering is the more interesting number. A year ago Gemini was widely treated as the assistant playing catch-up; at the billion-user mark, the gap has narrowed to roughly a single quarter.
Google’s breakdown of how people actually use the app is less predictable than the headline. Voice has become a primary interface rather than a novelty, with 63 percent of Gemini users talking directly to the assistant. Image generation is running at more than 150 million images a day. And more than 100 million of the app’s active users are on Apple hardware — a reminder that the growth is not purely an Android distribution story.
The caveat sits in what the number counts. Google says the figure covers the standalone Gemini app and does not include AI users reached through other channels, which leaves out Gemini working inside Search’s AI features, Workspace and Android system integrations. Those surfaces touch far more people, but they also blur the line between someone deliberately using an assistant and AI simply appearing in a product they already had open. Counting only the app is the more conservative choice.
Distribution remains the engine. Gemini ships in front of users across Search, Workspace and Android, and the standalone app inherits a funnel that rivals have to pay to build. It is the same advantage that let Google close a gap it had been losing: as recently as June, ChatGPT slipped below 50 percent of the assistant market as Gemini and Claude gained ground.
Worth being clear about what the milestone does not settle. Monthly actives measure reach, not revenue, retention or intensity of use, and Google published no paid-subscriber figures for its Gemini tiers alongside the number. A billion people opening an app once a month is a real distribution achievement. It is not yet evidence that the assistant has become the daily habit Google is building for.
